2008.08.15: Top 50 Maryland Foundations by Giving
Maryland's foundations will donate more than $700 million to nonprofit organizations this year. Here is a list of the top 50 foundations. Take note of the Robert M. Fisher Memorial Foundation: its grants jumped from $4.3 million in 2005 to more than $16 million in 2006. Also on the move is the Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment, with more than $130 million in gifts received since 2002. At least two-thirds of its giving -- an estimated $7 million in 2007 -- have stayed in Maryland in recent year.

Maryland's 1,600 foundation's assets top $13.3 billion. Nearly 200 foundations have been created since 2005, and 10% of these new foundations already have assets of more than $1 million. Look here for a list of the Top 50 Maryland foundations, including the Orokawa Foundation -- started in 2005, its 2007 assets were $66,128,523.

2008.08.01: Top 50 Greater Washington Private Foundations by Assets
Private foundations in the Washington Region number more than 1,500, and have assets of more than $12 billion. Here is a list of the Top 50, the heavy hitters in the nation's capital. New to the list is the Laszlo N. Tauber Family Foundation, with 2006 assets of more than $160 million. This major new foundation, begun in 2004, focuses on four areas: education, biomedical research, services to persons with psychosocial and psychiatric disabilities, and social welfare.

2008.08.01: Top 50 Greater Washington Private Foundations by Giving
Look here for list of the Top 50 private foundations in the Washington region. The surprise leader is the Charles E. Smith Family Foundation, with more than $50 million in giving, most of it building the assets of two other regional foundations. Sherman Fairchild Foundation comes in second, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is third, more than doubling its giving since 2005.
